Konawaena football team plans events

The Wildcats will hold a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. April 27 at Patz Pies at Paparoni’s in Captain Cook. Tickets, which include a buffet and prize drawings, are $20 in advance and can be purchased from the Konawaena High School athletic department.

A limited number of tickets will be available the day of the event for $25 each.

The Wildcats will partner with Hawaii Food Basket May 30 for a food drive at their Green & White game at Konawaena High School.

Fans who donate four cans or five pounds of food will receive complimentary tickets to the game. Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for senior citizens; and free for children 12 and younger. Food items must be in cans or unopened nonperishable bags.

The Green & White game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:30 flag football game between the police and fire departments.

Makalei Golf Club closure

The Makalei Golf Club will be closed April 24 and 25 for maintenance and will reopen April 26.

Konawaena golf benefit

The ninth annual Konawaena Foundation golf tournament is scheduled for May 3 at Makalei Golf Club. Registration begins at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8.

The format is two-person scramble, with each person hitting at least six tee shots. Big Island Honda will give away a new Honda for the first hole-in-one on a designated par-3; there will be prizes on other par-3s.

For applications, call Lee Kagawa at 747-8730. Applications must be submitted by April 24 to Makalei Golf Club.

Honokaa seeking football coaches

Honokaa High School is accepting applications for varsity football head coach and assistants.

Applications are available from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. school days, in the main office, and can be delivered to the main office or the office of the athletic director in the gym.

Deadline for applications is April 25.

Parks and Recreation activities

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering after-school programs for youth.

The “board and table games” activity, for ages 5 to 14, is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through May 14, at Kekuaokalani Gym. Register by April 30.

The “sports and games” activity, for ages 9 to 14, is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, through May 15, at the gym and Old Kona Airport Park fields. Register by April 24.

Pueo Kupuna golf fundraiser

The Pueo Kupuna softball team will hold its fifth annual golf tournament fundraiser April 27 at the Big Island Country Club. Tee time is 7 a.m. The format will be two-man scramble, modified best ball.

The Pacific Rim Rugby Club is seeking male and female players for its middle and high school leagues.

Summer hoops camp at Konawaena

The 2014 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball Camp will be held June 16 to 20 at Konawaena High School.

The camp, under the direction of Andy Smith, offers skill development for youngsters and introduces them to college-style workouts and training.

Smith will be joined on the teaching staff by college coaches from the junior college, NAIA and NCAA levels.

The camp fee is $350 and includes a jersey and shorts, college coaching and instruction, meals and seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment.
